SHRI THANEDAR- A MAN WITH MANY FACETS
Growing up in Belgaum, India, Shri came to the United States to study for a PhD at the University of Akron, Ohio. After earning his PhD in 1982, he carried out post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan and later took a job as a researcher with the former Petrolite Corporation. Eventually, he also earned an MBA from Fontbonne University. Today, Shri is a successful entrepreneur with many accolades under his belt and one of his roles is as CEO and Chief Scientist of Avomeen Analytical Services in Michigan. Amongst his many accolades and awards, in 2007, Shri Thanedar won the ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ award from Ernst and Young.
Blessed with a great sense of humor, in one of his interviews, Shri mentions that his zest for life and positive influence comes from his mother who he holds very dear to his heart. He believes she has an been an inspiration in all that he has done and has taught him to stand strong in all situations. Despite having suffered many setbacks in business, Shri believes that failure only led him to achieve more and work harder. ‘The more I fail, the more I want to succeed. The harder I fall, the higher I rebound’ ; this is the motto that he lives by.
Apart from being a prolific business person, Shri always finds the time to devote to his other interests ; writing, promoting the arts and of course, mentoring budding entrepreneurs! When asked in an interview, how despite his schedule, he manages to make time for his hobbies, he mentions the word of his ‘guru’ Dan Sullivan who told him, that every man has a unique ability, that which gives him energy and motivation ; concentrate on only those things that give you this energy! Following on his mentor’s advice, Shri devotes only the time required to his business, thus enabling him to focus on his other interests. He has now also established a family foundation called the Thanedar Foundation to promote the arts and to mentor young budding entrepreneurs.
Shri has always been involved in spearheading activities of the Marathi community. He was instrumental in setting up the Marathi Mandal in St Louis and subsequently became the St Louis representative at the BMM. The next step for him was to become an Executive Committee member of BMM and finally in 2003 he became the President of the BMM Convention. Through his participation at various levels, Shri believes he has had the wonderful opportunity to serve the Marathi community in enabling to bring together our people and pass on our cultural heritage to the youth. Now a resident of Ann Arbor, Shri is actively involved in the Mandal activities. He will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BMM 2015 to be held in July 2015 in Los Angeles!
Shri credits his wife Shashi for always being there for him and his family and many of us recognise her by her warm and welcoming smile when we visit their beautiful home for screenings and various other cultural programs! Shri’s book, ‘Hee Shrichi Ichha’ is available for download at :
