The first M.A,I.Y.T.R.A Convention in 1994

M.A.I Y.T.R.A (Maharashtrian Association Of Indian Youths Together Representing America) was a concept that was created by Dr. Ranjit Sanghvai and Dr. Varsha Bilolikar, its first Presidents.


On July 4th 1994, Amit Kshirsagar, his elder brother Rahul, and all of their friends were invited to represent Detroit, at the first M.A.I.Y.T.R.A convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. The word Maiytra, in Marathi means friendship. That year, the convention was held in the grand ballroom of the Duke convention Center in the heart of Cincinnati, Ohio.


Rahul Kshirsagar focused on Shivaji. Shivaji was a great warrior and king who fought bravely with the moguls. He talked about Shivaji’s role in securing the Maratha Empire. He livened up his presentations by giving examples of some confrontations Shivaji had with his enemies. Some of these were very graphic, like the story of when Shivaji had cut off the fingers of Shahiste Khan.


Madhu Deshpande talked about the Artistic Sites in Maharashtra. She focused mainly on the Ajanta Caves and gave a detailed explanation of the relationship of the history of these caves to the ancient culture in the region we now call Maharashtra. She also mentioned the Ellora caves which were also carved out of mountains.


Nandita Sapre talked about Social Reform in Maharashtra. She gave a historical account of social reform and then emphasized what young Maharashtrian-Americans can do to help out Maharashtra. She gave many examples of people in India who fought for issues such as women’s rights, widow re-marriage, education, caste equality and rural development. One important point that she made was that “When you educate a woman, you educate the whole family.”


On the second of day of the convention, a special Abhang ( a category of Marathi poems) program was held for those who savored the melodic musical tastes of Indian Classical music. After that, a scrumptious 7-course buffet-style banquet dinner was served in the formal banquet hall. In the evening, an Entertainment program featuring Atul Gupte who was dancing to the music of ( Sexy Sexy Sexy ) Baby Baby Baby Mujhe Log Bole from the film Khuddar.
